Daytona

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona stands as one of the most distinctive timepieces available on the market today. It was originally conceived to meet the specific needs of racing drivers—specifically, the calculation of average speeds and the measurement of elapsed time. Fundamentally, it is a chronograph; however, its functional architecture is far more intricate and sophisticated. Equipped with a tachymeter bezel, the watch calculates speed based on the duration it takes for an object to traverse a fixed distance.

The watch achieved legendary status when the wife of racing driver Paul Newman gifted one to her husband, and he subsequently chose to wear it as his daily timepiece. In 1963, the name "Daytona" was officially established—a designation that remains in use to this day.

Project X Decides to Recreate the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Rolex introduced this mechanical chronograph in the early to mid-1960s (specifically in 1963), and the model has since evolved and undergone refinements across three distinct generations. These three series were launched in 1963, 1988, and 2000, respectively. The distinctions between these generations lie not in their aesthetic appearance, but primarily in their functional design. Notably, the second-generation series upgraded the manual-winding mechanism to an automatic movement, while the third-generation series marked a pivotal moment in which Rolex achieved the complete in-house manufacture of the movement itself.
